iii. thanks and stuff

very excited to finally share this film with the world. it has been quite a process, with long weekends of soccer games and endless all nighters and the entire game of thrones series soundtrack on seven hour repeats and something called "death wish coffee" working together to keep me going.

special shoutout to reese and greyson blum, who are an integral part in keeping me inspired and entertained, and for enthusiastically helping me with this project from 508 miles away.

and to tristan, who had to pretend he could still play the piano for this one. thanks for answering all my late night emails.

Let the thesis prep work begin!

Animatic update, now with Renders.

ii. render test

  • got some stellar refraction warping going on
  • added rim lighting for the effect
  • light linked some stuff from within the puddle so we can see her face
  • fish are going to be orange because color contrast
  • playing with selective focus in post

iii. star wars: the last jedi countdown

24 days 15 hours 23 minutes

november 13th

i. animatic update

render notes:

  • Shot 1- 45 minutes
  • Shot 2- 40 minutes
  • Shot 7- 37 minutes

things I still have to do:

  • animation in non-rendered scenes is not final. Still needs a lot of work. but she skips in the middle of her walk now.
  • soundtrack has a version 4 coming. i think i finally have it figured out
  • sound fx, i want to foley most of them.
  • no post-work has been done yet on renders

november 6th

i. animatic update

ii. render tests

  • aesthetic is definitely set
  • fog is on point
  • render times are ranging 30-45 seconds per frame (praise)
  • started messing around in nuke for post
  • added a cross street and more buildings in the background to flesh out the environment (second image). they get a little lost in the fog but I like the effect of the added depth.

i. animatic update

current problems include, but are not limited to:

  1. in the process of moving everything from step to spline, there are for sure some spots i missed so far
  2. something is going on with my facial rig that i can't quite figure out...the controls only jump between the extremes of the blendshapes and wont key in-betweens, and the shape editor wont work for the face because of the driven keys and controls, I guess. I'm working on figuring this out so my facial animation can happen.
  3. fish rigging and tree are coming once they stop crashing maya
  4. have to move that trash can...do i need to have an obvious source point for the rock or can it just be chilling on the sidewalk?

ii. render tests

Render test for shot 1. Render times coming in at 40-50 seconds per frame.

october 25th

i. render tests

  1. lighting is still missing a haziness feel to it
  2. bump maps on environment are not final
  3. tried to add fog, it didn't work quite yet. need to find a better tutorial.
  4. the warmer tones of the final image...good or bad?

october 23rd

i. animatic update

ii. render tests

  1. my render times are currently in the range of 30 seconds to a minute per frame, and I think I can get them consistent at that 30 second mark once I drop the reflectiveness on all the textures again.
  2. still playing with the color scheme. I like the addition of the cool grey-ish blue tones
  3. bump-mapped a logo onto her boots. it's pretty cool.

i. 3d animatic update

A few notes:

  1.  I ran into a lot of trouble with the rig after switching back to 2017 and it malfunctioned continuously throughout the process of updating my animatic. I might need to redo the rig with a clean OBJ mesh in 2017 to get it to work consistently? TBD.
  2. I have a 6 year old writing out my credits. I'm really excited about getting an authentic kid's handwriting look for those, in addition to adding the concept art.

ii. render test
