i. midterms animatic

  • all major environments blocked and modeled

  • all animation at at least second pass

  • 25% of scenes finalized

  • render tests and rendered scenes

  • soundtrack still in progress

ii. render tests

  • textures are better, i think MK looks a little washed out

  • lighting not quite there, needs more experimenting. its simultaneously too dark and too light at the same time?

iii. what’s next

  • meeting with a voice actress starting next week

  • working on texturing the rest of the scenes

  • render testing galore

i. animatic update

somehow it got longer please help.

ii. audio…

is being worked on, i promise

iii. rendering

so i got in touch with the guys at Taiko Studios, who just released this short film, and apparently they did hand painted textures with arnold cell shading, and all the rim lighting in post? rotoscoping, my dudes.

iv. i still don’t have a title?

september 20th

i. look development

  • i’m looking into cell shading

  • i keep having this idea in my head of a very stylized idea of my film, and i think toon shading is going to be the answer

  • so i’ve been doing a lot of research with the new arnold update

  • here’s some reference:

  • this film from TAIKO Studios just dropped today but i’ve been following the development on instagram for a hot second and i am in love with the LOOK

iii. animatic update

iV. a few thoughts on the voiceover

there's still a few things i want to change about the audio here to make it feel more personal. I think I want to include an opening where the Mom is actively talking to MK, like she is purposely making the recording for the "just in case" kind of scenario. This is a lesson that is important for MK to understand, so I need to figure out how to get that just right.

V. still missing from the animatic because i had just thought about this this morning...

  • MK messing with the cassette player to get it to work, wiggling the wires and giving it a good bang
  • Shark turning off the recording when he first rolls up to the bridge so we really get the sense that this is A Moment. This is Shark vs. the recording, survival vs. comfort.
  • MK gets up and turns it back on. it needs to be obvious that she cares more about this recording than just about anything else.
